Mobile Apps Enrich The Lives Of Seniors And Family Caregivers

Lately I have developed a passion for mobile apps, more specifically iOS apps: those apps or games that are sold in iTunes for iPhone, iPod or iPad.

My passion has led me to create a little app called Smart Tot Rattle which is aimed at the younger generation…I mean way younger, as you can probably tell by the name.  This app is available for download in the App Store and it is a free app.  It is also free of advertisements.

There are many great apps out there to help make your life easier but finding the good ones can be challenging.  I thought it might be helpful to list a few of the good ones here.

AARP has a suite of free apps for iOS and Android.

Crosswords for iPhone ($9.99)  Crosswords for iPad   Android

On the surface this seems like a kind of hefty price but when you consider that there are 1000′s of puzzles included from some of the largest newspaper sources out there then you can see that it is a good value, especially compared to the investment you would make at the newsstand for the same number of puzzles.

Each puzzle gives hints, clues, and website lookups.  It’s the perfect app for seniors who enjoy a good crossword puzzle to keep them alert and sharp.

Technology has the ability to make our lives so much easier and richer.  I would love to hear about the apps which you use and why you use them.  Please leave a comment and I will attempt to review them in future posts. And if you are a developer who has made an app that enriches the lives of seniors and caregivers, please contact us. We would love to hear from you.

  • It’s great to read about AARP’s apps!

I am just about to release an app for caregivers for Androids called “Alzheimer’s Story Starters”. If you are available to test it, I’d be glad to hear what you think of it.

It gives caregivers a topic, a story on this topic, photos, songs (some recorded for this app, and some YouTube links), and ideas of what to talk about when that caregiver needs some inspiration to spark the stories of elders, especially when stuck at the doctor’s office, in a long line at the grocery store, or at home needing something to talk about.

I have also just published a book for caregivers, which you might like to see as well. The e-version is on my website, caregiverheart.com, and I can mail a physical copy as well.

I am an Eden Associate, and proud of Eden’s work in the field of supporting our elders.

Thank you, and I look forward to hearing from you,
