Caregivers Need Good Rx Info

One of the best things about being a caregiver blogger is our readers.  We get so much good information and feedback from all of you.  This is the time of year to pause and say:  Many thanks to you all!  We wish you and your loved ones all the best in the coming year.

Here’s just one good example of what I am talking about.  Recently Jason sent us a link to RxFind, a very comprehensive list of prescriptions drugs, drug interactions, side effects and whatever you want to know about your medicines and those of your aging parent.  In fact, they bill themselves as the “World’s Biggest Drug Database.”  I found the site convenient, informative and easy to use.  Click the hyperlink above and check it out yourself. Caregiving and Cleaning the Oven

The house still smells slightly of smoke this morning.  Bill and I were in the middle of paying bills yesterday when we decided to clean the oven.  I’m not sure why.  Maybe anything seemed preferable to tackling this month’s especially complicated credit card statement.

First there was an intensive search for the stove’s Use and Care Manual.  It seemed only to be expected that I could locate all the literature on every large appliance we own except the stove.  Eventually, after Bill found the stove’s model number, we tracked down the manual on line and printed it out.  The instructions were deceptively simple—close the door, push the “clean” button, set the time and the stove does all the rest.

Bill grabbed the oven shelves while I emptied the warming drawer and wiped out the …

Aging Homeowners Benefit from Village Assistance

If you own your home and your son doesn’t rehab old houses, you need a handyman (or woman).  This person must be competent, reliable and trustworthy.  They must have good communication skills and be affordable.  This is an amazingly tall order in today’s world.

But for those of us who live in an aging in place Village neighborhood like Washington Park Cares in Denver, finding honest, trustworthy and competent help around the house is not a problem.  Some of this help comes from the organizations volunteers.  If you have a light bulb you can’t reach or need safety grab bars installed in your bathroom, a volunteer may be available to do it.

Otherwise, the organization carefully vets service providers–like our sprinkler and tree man, Don Chapman, who came the same day last summer when …

My Elderly Father's Change Of Heart

I am excited to realize that we have been publishing Inside Aging Parent Care for a year and a half now.  In celebration of this most recent anniversary, here is our very first post:

For many of us, it begins with a phone call.  In our case, the call came from my 89 year old father late in the spring of 2008.  He had been released from Waterman Hospital after his third bout with pneumonia a few weeks earlier.  “I’ve been thinking,” he said,  “why am I here when you are there?”

We had often encouraged Dad to consider moving from his home at an assisted living facility in Central Florida to join us in Denver where Bill and I have lived for the past twenty years.   Up until now he had always resisted …
